Solitude's Paradox
Screenplay
SCENE 1: BLACK SCREEN
VOICE-OVER There are two kinds of beauty: The genuine kind and the deceptive kind. The former could love a person with all their heart, and the latter loves no person, but loves the love projected at them. I am of the former. And the woman that I loved... Probably the latter for all I care.
SCENE 2: ASHER’S HOME
ASHER,25, looks into the camera, looking lost & confused, half naked with only his shorts on. He is wrinkled and ungroomed, with a two-day beard.
VOICE-OVER I gave my heart to her, she took it, and threw it right back at me, actually I’m not too sure if she did... Even if she did, I can’t seem to find it...
Table with rotten pizzas, with maggots crawling, empty wine bottles at the side, tissues everywhere. Wet floor with unknown liquids, half eaten rotten food with cockroaches roaming around.
VOICE-OVER The world seems to be turning, yet I lay here stagnant, no longer knowing what goes on in the world outside. What does it matter anyway? I’ll just add to its instability.
ASHER lies on the bed, with sun shines on his face. He looks restless. The sun goes off and moonlight comes in. (Timelapse effect) and goes back to sun.
VOICE-OVER I had something special, but it was torn apart, broken into pieces, shattered, as she sets her heart someplace else. And I... I cast myself into cigarettes and alcohol.
He walks to a corner trying to get wine, he steps on a cockroach and he realises there is no wine left.
VOICE-OVER Ah damn it... Ran out. Just when I was enjoying the feeling of solitude
He slowly puts on his singlet, jacket, and a cap, and wears his slippers and goes out.
VOICE-OVER (Sigh) Solitude, what a beautiful feeling. No need for worry, no pain to feel, no sense of evil to distract me. It’s just me and my mind. Now I have to enter the realms of men, for substances that numbs my mind.
Walks out of the room
SCENE 3: EXT. STREET - DAY
He walks down from his apartment, hardly open his eyes. He slowly walks to a grocery store next door. He saw a homeless man lying on the floor, screaming but no one looks at him. He walks away from the man. He stops after a few steps, turns back and walks towards the man. He saw a nail in the man’s foot. He took the nail out and uses the water next to the man to wash his foot & takes off his singlet to wipe the wound. CUT TO ASHER’s expression, hopeless and sympathy (ECU) CROSSFADE Man’s expression, screams in pain (ECU) The man hugs ASHER, ASHER gives the man his slippers.
MEDIUM CLOSE UP OF Man’s smile & ASHER’s face. He walks away. He sees a boy refuses to go into a barber shop, but forcefully pulled in by his mom.
SCENE 4: EXT. ALLEY - DAY
He walks past an alley and sees a guy trying to rape a girl in her revealing dress. He turns back and dashes into the alley. He pushes the guy away and raises his arm to protect the girl.
MEDIUM CLOSE UP The guy hits him and he hits him back. (Slow-mo) The guy runs away, he takes off his jacket and put on the girl who is crying and squatting on the floor. He walks away.

DOLLY ZOOM
He walks towards the camera on the street.
VOICE-OVER I go out and all I see is godlessness. A karaoke of pain searing through the streets.
(Optional) He passes by the homeless man he took the nail out from.
HOMELESS Move on brother, move on. For the pendulum will keep on swinging, regardless of how long you take to move the pieces.
(Optional)
He walks up towards his home.
SCENE 8: INT. ASHER’S HOME
He looks into the mirror, and sees himself in a clean surrounding. He turns around and sees the room still in a mess.
VOICE-OVER I may have lost myself, but I think I’ve gained something in the process. I think... I guess solitude does things to you. A form of transcendence through self-reflection, as you begin to reflect, to retract... Memories, possibilities, everything your brain holds dear suddenly becomes a projection of your vision.
He sets his beer down and prepares to go to bed.
VOICE-OVER I was stuck with no purpose, with a woman whom I thought I loved. Now I know who it is I love. To have the will to help others, I must love myself, no? I guess to feel good, one must first go through the vile.
VOICE-OVER (sigh) I guess promises are meant to be broken.
Lies down on his bed.
VOICE-OVER (Sigh of relief) Tonight I shall die again, and wake up anew once more in the morrow.
